Whittaker OUT of UFC 234 after being taken to hospital

UFC 234 will move forward with Israel Adesanya vs. Anderson Silva taking over the headlining slot.

According to a report by ESPN, Whittaker suffered a hernia in his abdomen and could not be cleared to compete.

Whittaker was taken to hospital on Saturday morning, a source told ESPN's Ariel Helwani.

The UFC is back in Australia for today's UFC 234 event.

The event was scheduled to take place in Melbourne, with the 28-year-old the first Australian to hold a UFC belt.

This is the second time Whittaker has been forced to withdraw from a scheduled title fight down under, after a range of injuries kept him from fighting Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 in Perth past year.

Other fights on the UFC 234 main card include Rani Yahya vs. Ricky Simon (Bantamweight), Montana De La Rosa vs. Nadia Kassem (Women Flyweight) and Jim Crute vs. Sam Alvey (Light Heavyweight).

The loss of Whittaker will certainly be a massive disappointment for many fans with UFC 234 tickets.

"I definitely think there should be some sort of feeding program for the UFC, like The Ultimate Fighter has been but I think The Ultimate Fighter has served its goal", Gastelum said ahead of his fight at UFC 234 (via MyMMANews). Lando Vannata and Marcos Mariano's lightweight matchup will also be elevated to co-main status. Injuries kept him from fighting Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 in Perth previous year.

Adesanya, a New Zealander who UFC called its breakout star of 2018 in its release, made his UFC debut only a year ago in the preliminary card of UFC 221, the same event that Whittaker had to pull out of.
