UK To Send F-35s, Aircraft Carrier to South China Sea

Gavin Williamson

"Brexit has brought us to a great moment in our history", said Mr. Williamson.

"A post-Brexit global Britain must be about taking action alongside our friends and allies and action to oppose those who flout worldwide law".

He continued: "I want to see our armed forces embracing transformation at an ever-faster rate, keeping pace with technological change, enhancing our mass and increasing our lethality".

He said the £3 billion aircraft carrier's first mission is part of "making Global Britain a reality".

Britain's defense minister says the country should bolster its military capabilities after Brexit and warned that Russian Federation should be aware that actions deemed unacceptable by the West will "come at a cost", according to a text seen by Reuters.

Mr Williamson added "state-on-state competition was reviving" through proxy wars such as operations to eliminate Islamic State and Al Qaeda in Syria and the wider Middle East where Western countries and Moscow have clashed over policy.

He will go on to say: "We have to be ready to show the high price of aggressive behaviour".

The carrier, Britain's largest and most powerful warship, will carry its contingent of state-of-the-art F-35 stealth fighter jets as well as US Marine Corps F-35s as it ventures into a region where "China is developing its modern military capability and its commercial power", Williamson added.

Defending interventionist policy, he will say the cost of failing to act in global crises had often been "unacceptably high", and that Western powers can not "walk on by when others are in need".

"To talk, but fail to act, risks our nation being seen as little more than a paper tiger".

He said the United Kingdom would build new alliances and rekindle old ones, and shared his belief that Britain "should be the nation that people turn to when the world needs leadership".
