Netflix rolls out 'Smart Downloads' feature for iOS

Launching Smart Downloads on iOS is yet another way Netflix continues to improve the viewing experience for the users by making it easier for them to connect with the stories they love and allowing them to take their favorite Netflix stories with them

Back in July of 2018, Netflix unveiled a 'smart downloads' feature for its Android and Windows 10 apps to help manage the downloaded episodes on your device.

Presently, that very same functionality has advanced over to Netflix's iOS app, ensuring that your "downloads" list is consequently populated with the following unwatched scene and cleared of the ones you've just gorged through.

Smart Downloads automatically downloads the next episode for a show you are watching once you finish the current episode. The feature is created to automatically delete an episode before it installs a new one. As for how the feature actually works, well, it will identify the series and the episodes users are watching and then decides when to activate the automatic download action. You need the appropriate app and offline storage to use Smart Downloads. Once downloaded, Netflix automatically removes the previously downloaded episodes, making more space available for future downloads. This feature obviously only applies to episodic shows, not movies.

You can also to turn the feature on and off from the App Settings. For example, suppose you have already downloaded the first three episodes. Once it's updated, open the app and go to My Downloads section. Of course, it does that in Wi-Fi range, not over mobile data.

"The faster our members can get to the next episode of their favourite stories, the better". From today, Netflix Subscribers who use iOS can download Netflix episodes to their phone in much the same way podcasts work. "The feature is one more way we're making it easier for Netflix fans to take the stories they love wherever they go".
