Inter strips Icardi of captaincy

Inter chief executive Giuseppe Marotta told Icardi of the decision

Mauro Icardi has refused to travel for Inter Milan's Europa League match with Rapid Vienna after being stripped of the captaincy at Inter Milan.

That transfer did not happen as Inter rejected Arsenal's loan approach, but Nara's suggestion "personal issues" were behind the forward's desire to leave prompted the club to name Samir Handanovic as their new club captain.

A native of Rosario, Icardi joined the club in 2013 from Sampdoria.

However, that has done little to assuage doubts over his future and head coach Luciano Spalletti - speaking after a 1-0 win over Parma at the weekend - expressed his frustration.

"Mauro was called up for Vienna, but he didn't want to come".

"It was a hard decision but it was supported by everyone at the club and made for the good of Inter as well as the team".

But that record has not always translated into a glowing relationship between the striker and his club, with directors and fans alike at times exasperated by the behaviour of Icardi and wife and agent Wanda Nara. "Obviously he was disappointed, but there are things going on which are disturbing him and the team". But we think it is for the best on the pitch, from the next game onwards.

Icardi, who has eight caps for Argentina, scored 122 goals in 208 appearances for Inter, who are now third in Serie A, 20 points behind leaders Juventus.

Icardi's hesitance on signing a new deal is born from his desire to play at the highest level, competing for trophies.

"There has been a lot of nonsense said about Mauro, for example a supposed fine that did not exist", she said. "I can not understand if these bad things come from outside or within".
