Grammys 2019: See all the red carpet arrivals

2019 Grammys marked by drama and drop-outs

Grande, whose new album, "Thank U, Next", dropped Friday, had been included in promotions for the Grammy Awards on billboards and buses around Los Angeles in recent weeks.

The Grammys are a beast of an award show.

The lead up to this year's Grammys hasn't been completely smooth though.

"I don't think you can say anyone is a front-runner", said Melinda Newman, West Coast editor of Billboard magazine.

A few hours before the main 61st Grammy Awards show, Brandi Carlile was already on a roll. Alicia Keys is hosting this year's event - and she's the first woman to do so in over a decade.

"I can pull together a performance over night and you know that, Ken", she wrote Thursday afternoon.

Brandi Carlile, the folk singer nominated for six Grammys including album, song and record of the year, looked to Monae and said: "Girl, I would vote you into presidency".

Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich told the Associated Press that Grande, who is nominated for best pop vocal performance and best pop vocal album, declined to perform Sunday because she "felt it was too late for her to pull something together".

The 2019 Grammy Awards take place this Sunday, February 10th, and exclusive broadcasting rights for the music awards show in Canada goes to Rogers Media, which will be airing the Grammys on Citytv.

Carlile told the AP she stands behind Grande's "decision to stand up for herself and her art".

The Grammys are in even worse shape than the Oscars when it comes to figuring out ratings and appeal, and face a continued low-key boycott from music's biggest names on account of an ongoing problem with representation across nominations.

Only two albums by hip-hop artists have ever won the album of the year Grammy - Lauryn Hill's "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" in 1999, and Outkast's "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" in 2004.

When asked about the lack of women in the top categories at the 2018 Grammys, Recording Academy CEO Neil Portnow said women need to "step up". He later acknowledged that it was a "poor choice of words", and it forced the academy to launch a new task force focused on inclusion and diversity. Women artistes are leading the nominations for big categories like album of the year and best new artist. But with Lady Gaga, Shawn Mendes, Cardi B, and Travis Scott among the evening's performers, there won't be a shortage of star power.
