Danai Gurira Is Leaving ‘The Walking Dead’

'The Walking Dead': Danai Gurira Leaving as Michonne in Season 10

The second half of The Walking Dead Season 9 starts Sunday, following news that series star Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne, will leave the Walking Dead flagship show after briefly appearing in a smattering of Season 10 episodes.

Per the shocking development, Gurira will return as the katana-wielding Michonne for Season 10 in just a few episodes that will be dispersed throughout the season. The actress, playwright and social activist will then likely segue to the three Walking Dead movies that AMC is planning with former leading man Andrew Lincoln. Gurira will have the flexibility now to work on her feature film career (and appear in more MCU movies), while The Walking Dead will be able to hang on to one of its most popular characters.

Sorry Walking Dead fans, one of your favs is exiting the series. We love Danai; we love that character. "She is an incredibly valuable character and I'm really hoping she stays", he added. It was probably only a matter of time before she left to focus on her own projects, which include writing and producing an adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's hit novel Americanah into a limited series that will reunite her with Eclipsed star Lupita Nyong'o. Obviously, the lesson of Andy is that the show can survive anybody's departure if need be but that's not our goal.

Speaking of the big screen, Danai Gurira is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having appeared in Black Panther and Infinity War. She struck up a romantic relationship with Grimes along the way (a change from the comic canon), and still plays a key role in the comic series (much like Rick).

Her exit comes after what's been reported as "prolonged negotiations" with AMC, the company who produces the show, which is broadcast in Ireland on RTÉ 2.
