Verizon adds more phone subscribers than expected in fourth quarter

The company's response to all that criticism essentially boils down to "Sorry, not sorry". AT&T calls it "building a narrative". Chief executive John Legere is keen to brag about T-Mobile's progress on the 5G front, especially as the carrier continues to expand its customer base through an aggressive marketing strategy.

"What we're trying to do is two things".

Improvements to LTE aren't what any of AT&T's competitor's are calling 5G.

Verizon Communications Inc on Tuesday beat Wall Street estimates for net new phone subscribers who pay a monthly bill, adding 650,000 customers in the fourth quarter. "We're calling on the broad wireless industry to commit to labeling something 5G only if new device hardware is connecting to the network using new radio technology to deliver new capabilities".

"We're seeing more lines per account", Verizon Wireless President Ronan Dunne said at the Citi TMT West investor conference on Tuesday.

Verizon has promised to only label products "5G" if the device is actually delivering improved performance equal to 5G capabilities. "Didn't realize it was this easy, brb updating", it wrote under a video showing someone simply taping a "9G" sticker onto an iPhone.

Instead, AT&T wants to ride the 5G hype train of 2019 harder than most and has resorted to basically lying to its customers in this manner. Verizon is making this commitment today: We won't take an old phone and just change the software to turn the 4 in the status bar into a 5.

T-Mobile US's fourth-quarter wireless customer gains surpassed analyst estimates and topped strong growth at larger rival Verizon Communications, continuing the company's run as the fastest-growing USA mobile carrier. In light of this, real 5G can't arrive fast enough.
