They have yet to file any official paperwork with the courts, confirming expectations that they will seek to handle the matter privately so as to avoid attracting unwanted attention to the company.

Sworn Bezos foe, U.S. President Donald Trump, sniped: "It's going to be a beauty".

After news broke yesterday (Jan. 9) about Jeff Bezos impending divorce from his wife of 25 years, MacKenzie Bezos, it's now been confirmed that the couple married in 1993 without a prenuptial agreement.

The announcement comes amid numerous reports by outlets including People, the New York Post and Entertainment Tonight that Jeff Bezos is dating Lauren Sanchez. "If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again". Previous divorces involving high-net-worth figures have ended up having a material impact, including those of Elaine Wynn and casino magnate Steve Wynn, and former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and his ex-wife, Jamie.

Even if MacKenzie Bezos should eventually depart with half of Bezos' wealth, valued at US$137 billion (NZ$202 billion) atop Bloomberg's Billionaires Index, the Amazon founder would remain among the top four most wealthy.

Amazon chieftain Jeff Bezos' estranged wife is poised to deliver a $90-billion knockout punch to the tech titan.

The divorce is further complicated by the fact the couple reside in Washington in the USA which is a "community property state" which means all assets and debts accrued during the marriage are considered equally owned by both spouses, unless a prenuptial agreement states otherwise.

How the New York Post reported the story.

The divorce between Bezos and wife, MacKenzie, may be more complicated than originally expected.

NY matrimonial lawyer Bernard Clair said in that case a judge would likely determine MacKenzie Bezos' share of Amazon stock based on her contribution to her husband's success, which could include helping him make important business decisions or raising their children so he could focus on work. They also gave $10 million to a super PAC supporting military veterans trying to get elected to Congress.

According to CNBC, Bezos would have to shell out billions in cash and shares to MacKenzie, 48. The couple also have several homes, including one in Beverly Hills.
