The NFL Announces Super Bowl Halftime Show Artist

Travis Scott performs onstage during the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards at Radio City Music Hall

Maroon 5 has been officially named as the 2019 Super Bowl's halftime show headliner.

Grammy-nominated rapper Scott only agreed to perform during this year's halftime show if the National Football League made a donation to a social justice charity, Billboard reported.

Rapper Big Boi of Outkast performs onstage during Star 94.1 Jingle Jam, Dec. 12, 2018, in Atlanta. The former San Francisco 49ers player has gone unsigned by any team since the end of the 2016 season, during which he created the national anthem protest.

Thousands signed petition urging the three-time Grammy award victor Maroon 5 to not perform this year in solidarity with Kaepernick.

This year's Super Bowl will be broadcast from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta by CBS on February 3. The organization works to support economic, environmental and criminal justice innovators, according to its website. Actress Amy Schumer had also, in October past year, appealed to the band to pull out of performing, in what is the most-watched show on television. "I back anyone who takes a stand for what they believe in", he said.

"I think he should do what a lot of other major artists have done: say 'I'm not going to participate.' You can't fight against Jim Crow and then go sit in the back of the bus", the 64-year-old activist added. "I am proud to support Dream Corps and the work they do that will hopefully inspire and promote change". They released their debut album Songs About Jane in 2002 and have gone on to win three Grammy Awards.

Black Panther's Michael B. Jordan told Vibe magazine in December he hoped Travis Scott, also rumoured as a performer at the time, wouldn't participate for the same reason. Maroon 5's appearance will follow Justin Timberlake's unexceptional performance last year and Lady Gaga's standout showcase the year before that.
