Philippe Coutinho has emerged as a surprise rumoured Manchester United target in the January transfer window after he has failed to make the impact he would have liked at Barcelona, with Spanish papers reporting the interest in recent days.

The Brazil worldwide has been left out of the starting XI in each of Barcelona's last four games, and is believed to be growing increasingly unhappy with his marginalised role.

But the report states that Barcelona are only considering a sale of Coutinho to raise funds for a speculated mega-money move for Neymar, once the forward is available for transfer. But already the player's future is in doubt after the latest report suggests he could now be moved on in the summer.

Coutinho instantly won silverware upon his move last season, joining up with a Barca side who were well in front in the race for the La Liga title. Once again, they would only pay that if Coutinho is still at the club.

Barca have previously ruled out a return for the Brazilian but the club's director of institutional relations, Guillermo Amor, said in November: "Anything is possible".

'Now Coutinho isn't playing and it's the other way around. "[He is] one of the best players in Europe and he is ready to play [for] five minutes or 90 minutes".

"He's always played well for Barca, he could play [every game] from the off."

"He is not happy, he has to fight, but one or the other nearly always plays and Coutinho gives us a lot and will give us a lot". "He's got many years left on his contract and a lot to give to Barcelona".

The 26-year-old has been in hot form for Red Bull Leipzig this season, netting nine Bundesliga goals to add to the 22 he notched in last year's league campaign.
