Canada's Milos Raonic to face Aussie Nick Kyrgios at Australian Open

Bernard Tomic gazes at Nick Kyrgios during Davis Cup duty in 2016

While Australian cricket has suffered its share of embarrassment over the past 12 months, that's just a small slice of what tennis has endured over recent years through the dubious exploits of Bernard Tomic and Nick Kyrgios.

Serving for the contest in the second set, world number 85 Tomic moved into his service stance before chipping one ball over the net while still bouncing another, catching Kyrgios, the umpire and spectators completely off guard.

With Tomic sitting on two match points, the 26-year-old chose to try a trick serve, playing a between-the-legs shot over the net and into Kyrgios" service court before bouncing a second ball, seemingly in preparation for a "real' serve.

Tomic won the first battle of the tennis brats 6-3 6-4, although with little at stake it was hard to get a read on their true form heading into the first major of the year.

"I don't think there has ever been a player like BT".

Tomic will return to the main draw in Melbourne after falling the qualifying rounds past year.

Chastened somewhat, Tomic began to rebuild his game last season, winning his first title since 2015 at Chengdu last September and he appears to be carrying that momentum forward.

"He can make a run at the Australian Open, for sure".

Tomic's first set was nearly flawless, while Kyrgios looked a little underdone and struggled to find some rhythm early on. "The players gave us feedback that they would like to have a consistent ball".

Meanwhile, Tomic, who missed last year's Australian Open, has lofty ambitions for the 2019 competition.

World No.51 Kyrgios had a break point early in the second but was unable to consolidate with Tomic then breaking at 3-3.

I have never seen a serve like this.

The Australian Open 2019 draw was held early Thursday morning, and it revealed a tough first-round matchup for Milos Raonic and a potential second-round blockbuster for Eugenie Bouchard.
