Arsenal boss Emery: This is a bad result

Michail Antonio says Declan Rice will find it hard to ignore a call-up from England as he decides whether to represent the Three Lions or Ireland.

Declan Rice's first goal in the Premier League secured West Ham a memorable victory over Arsenal at the London Stadium.

"He's good enough to play in that midfield area".

But the London-born player has refused to fully commit himself to either England or Ireland, having not played a competitive game for the latter yet.

Rice scored the victor as West Ham beat Arsenal 1-0 at the London Stadium on Saturday in his 55th appearance for the club before his 20th birthday - which is on Monday - and produced a man-of-the-match performance in that game.

"I've spoken to him about it".

Speaking on Goals on Sunday, Antonio revealed that he had discussed the decision with Rice. Nearly all of those crocked centre-backs and full-backs are near ready for a return to first team action and they better be because this West Ham side can play. I decided for him to be a midfielder, he is playing the ball forward more, he shoots well and goes forward well.

McCarthy accepts the lure of England is strong if the player's main consideration is going with the team that will qualify for more tournaments. "I think that's his best position".

He said: "The thing is, people don't notice how much he breaks up the game". If an opposition full-back goes up, he's able to go out wide to deal with it. It would require a player of huge talent to overthrow the Brazilian from his position in the staring lineup, yet no long-term replacement is in place for when the ex-Shakhtar player moves on, as their deficiencies became all too evident after his brief spell away with injury.

"He was part of the team and I think that the complete team played very well".

"The club is working but I am happy with the players".
