22-Year-Old Police Officer Shot, Killed in California Responding to Crash

The shooter who killed Officer Natalie Corona, 22 in this college town on Thursday fired multiple times at the rookie cop and almost injured other bystanders, according to police. Corona started as a Davis community officer back in 2016 and graduated the Sacramento Police Academy this past summer.

"I've heard her described by our officers tonight as our daughter, our friend, and just a sister that we all wanted", he added.

Lt. Paul Doroshov, a spokesman for the Davis police department, said the agency hasn't lost an officer in the line of duty since 1959 when officer Douglas Cantrell was killed.

But her father says being an officer was truly her calling, often having a big heart, even when working.

Police surrounded a home several blocks from the shooting scene and tried to coax the man out of the building, the newspaper reported.

One of the drivers in the crash, Christian Pascual, 25, said the shooter appeared to have been a bystander who fired from behind him.

Her father, Merced Coronoa, is a retired 26-year veteran deputy with the Colusa County Sheriff's Office, who is is now a county supervisor.

The Davis police chief said his devastated department appreciates the outpouring of support from the community. She still showed up to work, he noted, as a volunteer.

In November, Payne made a post on Facebook about joining the police force. She was wearing a blue dress, standing on a road, and holding a fluttering American flag.

"I would like this photograph to serve as my gratitude for all those law enforcement men and woman who have served, who are now serving, and those who have died in the line of duty protecting our liberties in this great country", she wrote, alongside the picture below.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, there were 144 law enforcement officer fatalities in 2018.

Authorities say a rookie police officer killed on duty in Northern California was ambushed by a gunman on a bicycle.

California, Florida, New York, and Texas had the highest number of officer fatalities with 11 each.

Her death follows the killing of a central California officer on December 26 during a traffic stop. "This incident is a sad reminder of the risks that our public safety employees take every day on our community's behalf".

Corona came from a law enforcement family.

"We join all Californians in mourning the loss of this courageous officer and extend our deepest condolences to Officer Corona's family, friends, and coworkers", Newsom said in a statement. Police entered the home with a robot and confirmed he was dead. Officials hailed Provo officer Joseph Shinners, 29.

"She was a rising star in the department", Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said in an emotional news conference late Thursday.

Written messages and flowers are streaming in to the police department.
