People Were Injured in Destructive Tornadoes That Hit Illinois on Saturday

"We activated the State Emergency Operations Center so that we could closely monitor the situation, keep in contact with local officials and quickly mobilize any state assets that may be needed", Rauner said in a statement to AP.

The National Weather Service says the actual number of tornadoes that touched down will be confirmed in the coming days.

At least 12 were reported in IL on Saturday.

A swarm of tornadoes tore through homes, businesses and trees.

Up to three other tornadoes are being investigated in eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

The severe weather in IL was part of a line of thunderstorms that raked areas of the central United States late Friday and into Saturday, killing one person in Missouri. One person was killed in Missouri.

Residents in central IL assessed damage Sunday after tornadoes ripped roofs off homes, downed power lines, and injured at least 20 people the day before.

Hardest hit was the town of Taylorville, about 30 miles southeast of the capital of Springfield.

Assistant Fire Chief Andy Goodall spoke to reporters Saturday night after the storms raked the city of 11,000. Most were discharged within hours. There have been no reported deaths; however, at least one injury was reported as critical.

A full assessment will be completed sometime Monday or Tuesday after the teams have finished tracking the start and end points of the storms, Chris Miller, the warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Lincoln, told Fortune.

Early Saturday morning a third tornado with estimated peak winds of 107 mph travelled about 8.5 miles (13.5 kilometres) through Spring Hill in southwest Arkansas.
