Packers part ways with Head Coach Mike McCarthy, ‘effective immediately’

It's been a season of discord in Green Bay as The MMQB's Kayln Kahler noted this week, and Sunday's defeat will only fuel the frustration.

Crosby's late attempt started straight but quickly hooked to the right, sealing the Packers' 20-17 defeat to the visiting Arizona Cardinals.

The loss dropped the Packers to 4-7-1 after 12 games and likely eliminated Mike McCarthy's team as a legitimate playoff contender in the NFC.

Murphy, in a statement, said the 2018 season "has not lived up to the expectations and standards of the Green Bay Packers. As a result, I made the hard decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately", Packers president Mark Murphy said in a statement.

McCarthy has been the head coach in Green Bay since 2006 and has been coasting off of a Super Bowl victory since 2010. Not surprisingly, McCarthy is one of the first people fans will be blaming for this disappointment of a season.

The Cardinals' Week 13 road game against Aaron Rodgers and company will get some decent coverage. Several sources familiar with the inner workings of the organization say that it devolved into a competition over who can call the better play, and both want the credit when things go right.

The Green Bay Packers likely needed to win out in order to make the National Football League postseason and Aaron Rodgers' team had what seemed to be an easy victory today. Usually, over the years, the success that we've had, we've taken really good care of the football, but we've paired that with efficiency in the passing game and big plays and explosive gains.

Games involving do not often get greater television coverage than the local markets of the two teams playing. And we've been that way in New England and in Seattle and you can list off a couple other ones, opportunities, and we just haven't gotten it done in any of those.

McCarthy is the play caller, but because Rodgers is so intelligent and such a good improvisational player, the quarterback has the green light to change plays on the field as he see fit.
