Lion escapes enclosure kills worker

The incident happened when an animal keeper was cleaning the lion's enclosure at the Conservators Center in Burlington, North Carolina. The lion was later shot and killed.

A lion at a North Carolina private wildlife sanctuary fatally mauled a 22-year-old worker on Sunday before being shot and killed by local law enforcement, officials said.

The center says it wasn't immediately clear how the lion left the area that was supposed to be locked.

An investigation is ongoing as to how the lion escaped.

The lion "quickly killed" Black, the sheriff's office said.

A lion was shot dead today after it escaped from its enclosure at a USA nature reserve and killed a worker. It is unclear at this time how the lion left the locked enclosure.

"This person's passion was the zoological industry".

"And this person wanted to spend a lifetime around these animals", Stinner said in an emotional press conference. "I believe the family was very supportive of that".

She had started working at the Conservators Center - her first out-of-state internship - 10 days ago, her family said.

"She was a lovely young woman who had just started her career", her family said.

"She was a attractive young woman who had just started her career, there was a bad accident, and we are mourning", Ms Black's family said in a statement, according to news outlets.

Ms Black, a recent graduate of Indiana University, had worked a few weeks at the facility home to dozens of animals and 21 different species, its website says.

"Matthai is more shy than his siblings Calvin, Katrina and Savik when it comes to visitors, but he is an enthusiastic recipient of attention from the people he knows best", a profile of Matthai on the Conservators Centre website says.
