Heisman Trophy history: three quarterbacks of color

OU’s Kyler Murray named The Associated Press College Football Player of the Year

Kyler Murray transferred to Oklahoma after his freshman season, sat out a season per transfer rules and then backed up Mayfield.

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa carries the ball against The Citadel Nov. 17 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. It goes to the player of the year. Tagovailoa also won the Walter Camp Award, another award that goes to the best player in the country.

Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa won the Maxwell Award on Thursday night.

"Kyler Murray has accomplished more in one season and had more impact on the Sooners' tradition in one season than any other player in our history", said legendary former OU coach Barry Switzer.

Murray and Tagovailoa will now head to New York City as Heisman trophy finalists, with the victor more uncertain than usual.

Murray beat out Tagovailoa and Washington State's Gardner Minshew II for the Davey O'Brien. This is the sixth time in the past 15 seasons that different quarterbacks took home the Maxwell and Davey O'Brien awards, and in four of the previous five times the Heisman went to the O'Brien victor. The past four Maxwell winners and past five Walter Camp winners have all gone on to win the Heisman.

9 overall pick by the Oakland A's in last summer's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, is the second Sooner in two years to win the O'Brien Award, joining Baker Mayfield.

The skinny: Opened the season as the betting favorite for the Heisman despite not starting a game, thanks largely to a performance in the national title game that included the 41-yard winning touchdown pass in overtime. Tagovailoa has thrown for 3,353 yards, 37 touchdowns to four interceptions and has completed almost 68 percent of his passes.
