Former Pirates infielder Jose Castillo killed in car crash in Venezuela

Former Major League Baseball players Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo have been killed in a auto crash in Venezuela. Both were playing for Cardenales de Lara in the Venezuelan league.

Univision Sports, citing sources close to the players, reported Valbuena, Castillo and another player, former major leaguer Carlos Rivero, were traveling in Valbuena's auto from Caracas' University Stadium to Barquisimento, where Lara is scheduled to play Friday and Saturday.

Carlos Rivero, who played briefly with the Red Sox in 2014, was injured.

Valbuena was now a free agent, but he spent his last two seasons with the Los Angeles Angels.

"We are saddened by the tragic news that Luis Valbuena and former major leaguer Jose Castillo have died in a auto accident", Major League Baseball said in a tweet. In an 11-year major league career, he batted.226 with a.310 on-base percentage, a.394 slugging percentage, 114 homers and 367 RBIs in 1,011 games. He also had stints with the Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros. He had a.254 average with 39 home runs. He spent time with the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants before finishing his career with the Astros.
