"We have spent many years building a superlative organization that rivals some of Chicagoland's most successful and forward-thinking companies, and the Glassdoor Best Places to Work recognition demonstrates our accomplishments in this endeavor".

Chamberlain says the company audits the reviews for any signs of stuffed ballot boxes by employers, looking for suspect IP address patterns, for example.

Facebook ranked top in 2018 but has since sunk to seventh spot, ahead of Google in eighth.

One Googler in NY notes that the company's growing pains include "bureaucracy, slow to respond to market threats, bloated teams, cross-divisional tension, though nothing remotely approaching Microsoft's internal tension".

While Facebook was the best place to work in America previous year, Cupertino-based tech giant Apple had tumbled to number 84 in 2017 from its 36th position in 2016.

The firm ranked second on last year's list.

Tech companies took a third of the top spots in terms of best places to work based on employee ratings, according to a Glassdoor report. Companies are required to have at least 1,000 employees and 75 company reviews on Glassdoor, which uses an algorithm to calculate the rankings that assesses the quantity, quality and consistency of Glassdoor-approved company reviews shared by employees between October 23, 2017 and October 21, 2018.

Opportunities for advancement also got mentioned by workers.

Indeed, the difference between the top rated company and No. 100 on the list is just four-tenths of a point (4.6 to 4.2) on a 1 to 5 rating scale (with 5 being the best), making swings in the positions of employers on the list relatively common from one year to the next. Bain & Company, Google and Apple are the only companies to make Glassdoor's list of 100 companies all 11 years. Of late, Google employees have reportedly protested against the company over various issues, including issues related to sexual harassment at work, or the company's controversial projects such Dragonfly that is supposedly a censored version of Google search engine for China.

"Work-life balance is awful", one employee wrote in a review.

Only 53 per cent of Facebook employees said the company was making the world better, which is 19 per cent lower than past year.

Employee reviews cited the company's culture and community events as pluses.

Athletic apparel company Lululemon ranked ninth, with an employee rating of 4.4.
