Everyone Loves Tom Cruise's PSA About Motion Blurring on High-Definition TVs

Watch Tom Cruise's Impassioned PSA About the Dangers of Motion Smoothing

However, Cruise warned that the feature has an "unfortunate side-effect", which is to make "most movies look like they were shot on high-speed video rather than film".

The motion smoothing setting is present in almost all TVs incorporating HD and 4K resolution support and is most often left on by default by manufacturers - creating what some lament as the "soap opera" effect.

The problem with motion smoothing is that it creates frames that aren't in the original picture. Hence the nickname for this infamous technology: the soap opera effect.

The actor appeared in a video posted to Twitter, alongside director Christopher McQuarrie, warning of the impact of "video interpolation" or "motion smoothing", a technique used to smooth moving images on modern televisions - most commonly used to improve the viewing of sport.

The setting that causes this heinous effect is something called motion smoothing, something that's turned on by default on most new TVs for some reason.

"If you own a modern high-definition television there's a good chance you're not watching movies the way filmmakers intended, and the ability for you to do so is not simple for you to access", McQuarrie added.

As McQuarrie puts it, "without a side-by-side comparison, many people can't quite put their finger on why the movie they're watching looks odd".

Motion smoothing, which goes by different names depending on your TV manufacturer, does exactly what the name suggests - smooths out video.

Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie are here to warn movie lovers about a danger they're very likely unaware of. The film is being rebooted for television, but Cruise won't be part of it.

Cruise tweeted the PSA on Tuesday, and in the video, he and McQuarrie discuss the reasoning behind motion smoothing, and how interested viewers can turn the effect off to better enjoy their films. In the original film he plays a fighter pilot trying to secure the top pilot spot and win the heart of his flight instructor, Charlotte Blackwood, played by actress Kelly McGillis.
