Lee's wide-spanning cultural influence all started in 1961, when he and Jack Kirby birthed Marvel with The Fantastic Four.

The AP writes that as the top writer at Marvel Comics and later as its publisher, Lee revived the industry in the 1960s by offering the costumes and action craved by younger readers while insisting on sophisticated plots, college-level dialogue, satire, science fiction, even philosophy. Tributes are pouring in for Stan Lee who is being hailed as a real-life superhero for bringing joy to millions across the globe through his creations. He collaborated on its futuristic graphic novel Romeo & Juliet: The War, by Max Work and artist Skan Srisuwan. RDJ plays Tony Stark, or Iron Man, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has been a part of the franchise for more than a decade. The characters he assisted in creating have spawned television shows, cartoons and multiple blockbuster Hollywood movie series.

Those superheroes have been adapted into blockbuster films, most of which were made after Disney acquired Marvel in a 4-billion-dollar deal in 2009.

Creator Stan Lee poses with Spider-Man during the Spider-Man 40th Birthday celebration at Universal Studios on August 13, 2002 in Universal City, California.
