Rafael Nadal withdraws from ATP Finals to undergo ankle surgery

Khachanov dominates in Paris

Novak Djokovic will begin the week as the top-ranked men's singles player in the world, but it was not the ideal ending he anticipated after suffering a shock loss to Karen Khachanov in the final of the Roles Masters in Paris on Sunday.

Novak Djokovic returned to No. 1 on Monday after a two-year absence and is assured of becoming the first man in the history of the ATP rankings to finish a season at the top spot after being outside the top 20 during that season.

"However, since the problem in the abdominal muscle also prevents me from playing in London, we take advantage of the moment to remove the free body and avoid future problems".

Nadal did win the Rogers Cup in Toronto this season, but he has otherwise endured nothing but misery in this year's biggest hard-court events.

The world No 2 cited an abdominal injury as the reason and then decided after consulting with his doctor in Barcelona that he would immediately undergo keyhole surgery on a separate issue in his right ankle.

"Hello everyone: I am writing these words to you as the end of the season", Nadal wrote in Spanish on Twitter.

It is a frustrating time for the 32-year-old Spaniard, who has not played since a knee injury forced to him retire after two sets of his US Open semi-final against Juan Martin del Potro in September.

The tennis player explained the problem had been detected "a while ago and it occasionally bothered me.

This way I hope to be in full condition for next season".

By virtue of Nadal's withdrawal, Novak Djokovic has mathematically clinched the year-end No. 1 ranking. Roger Federer has a big serve too'.

He was his usual dominant self on clay, collecting an 11th French Open title and three more titles along the way.

Serbia's Novak Djokovic before the final against Russia's Karen Khachanov. The target for him must be to be fully fit for the clay-court season in May and June and trying to win a 12th French Open.

However, Nadal's primary focus once again next year may well be the clay season. No. 3 seed Zverev and No. 5 seed Cilic complete Group Guga Kuerten.
