Kyrie Irving lifts Celtics from horrific start to incredible comeback over Suns

The Celtics had put themselves in position for a final gasp and, when two defenders collapsed on Irving (and unforgivably didn't foul him or Morris before a shot), Irving didn't try to be a hero and flipped the ball to a wide-open Morris for a straightaway triple.

Brown's 3-pointer gave Boston a 112-109 lead with 2:05 left in overtime and Morris added a layup 26 seconds later.

And then, the Celtics everyone was expecting before the season showed up, led once again by Kyrie Irving.

Aron Baynes' putback with 5:04 left in the first quarter was the Celtics' second basket of the game, and they shot just 4 of 22 in the quarter.

"I'm taking a picture, the Suns got a lead".

"I told Igor we didn't deserve to win the game, but it was a great individual performance by Kyrie, certainly", Celtics coach Brad Stevens said.

That team was the same Celtics squad that routinely overcame double-digit deficits during last year's 55-win campaign.

Outside of Kyrie Irving, Boston's starters were a combined 0-for-15 (Jaylen Brown was 0-for-5; Jayson Tatum was 0-for-4; Al Horford was 0-for-3 and Gordon Hayward was 0-for-3) in the opening half.

For the first time this season, the Celtics were the underdog again. G Marcus Smart surpassed 1,000 rebounds and 400 steals for his career.

Facing the team with the worst record in the Western Conference in the Suns, the Celtics opened the game with 13 points and just four field goals in the first quarter, then finished the first half with no starter other than Kyrie Irving having scored a point.

Suns: Warren made his third start this season.

Celtics will take on the Jazz Friday before closing out their five-game west coast swing in Portland on Sunday.
