This year, the struggling retail chain has spent presumably all of its money on getting Elton John himself to be the face of the ad, rather than a fluffy thing with a name and a hashtag as they usually do. So will the retailer be selling pianos this Christmas?

The move comes ahead of John Lewis' much-anticipated Christmas campaign, which is reported to contain a starring role for the musician.

John Lewis addressed speculation about the cost of this year's ad, describing reports that it had paid Sir Elton £5 million as "wildly inaccurate".

He said: "I think Elton has enjoyed the process of making this tremendously".

Last year's John Lewis Christmas ad focused on the tale of Moz the Monster who lived under the bed of seven-year-old boy Joe.

"Seeing the accuracy, and the work that has been put into to creating everything, the attention to detail is fantastic, so it is very exciting to see, it is like taking a step back in time".

"The ad tells the story of why Elton's piano was more than just a gift and we hope to remind customers of that special moment when they've given a gift at Christmas time that they know will be treasured forever".

Elton John takes us on his musical career journey and reveals his most beloved Christmas gift to date - a piano from his mother and grandmother.

The two-minute film charts the life of the iconic pop star, using four actors to show key moments in his life, going right back to when he was given his first piano at Christmas.

It's got all it all hasn't it? When you've stopped crying (about how expensive pianos are), obvs.
