Gunman and 12 others dead in California bar shooting

At Least 11 People Injured in Shooting at a Bar in Thousand Oaks, California

"I love you. I'll talk to you later", Dean said.

Officials have not released the names of all the victims as they worked to notify the families.

The Los Angeles Times quoted a law enforcement official as saying at least 30 shots had been fired.

Authorities urged the public to avoid the area.

Long was a veteran and served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

The sheriff of Ventura County, California is describing what happened late Wednesday night when a gunman killed 12 people at a bar.

President Donald Trump was briefed on the shooting and praised law enforcement officers for their response.

Dean said Long was known to officers through a minor traffic collision and was a victim of a battery incident at a different bar.

The gunman was tall and wearing all black with a hood over his head and his face partly covered, witnesses told TV stations at the scene.

Neighbours said Thursday they would hear loud, aggressive fights between the two.

Dean said authorities have not yet identified a motive for the attack.

Civilians and other deputies pulled Sergeant Helus from the bar and he was taken to Los Robles hospital, where he died an hour later.

By the time they entered the bar again the gunfire had stopped. 13 people, at this time, have been reported dead. It's not yet clear how the gunman died, Dean said.

The bar is near several colleges, and is a popular spot for students Wednesday nights.

Von Molt said she and others from nearby California Lutheran University often gathered on Wednesday night to line dance to country music. Neighbors told local news channel ABC6 that Long lived with his mother, who had expressed concern over her son's behavior.

Dean said in the news conference that some people who tried to escape the chaos by breaking windows might have been injured.

Video from the scene accessed by The Associated Press is punctuated by loud sounds of several rounds of gunfire.

The wounded police officer was taken to hospital, but later died of his injuries. Three men rush out carrying a bloodied fourth individual.

Reports said there were around a 100 patrons inside the nightclub when the shooting began. "I don't know if she is alive", he said. "My heart goes out to his family - I can't imagine what they're going through right now". That exit leads to a patio where people smoke. It's something I had been setting myself up for, and then after the event, it really went into overdrive.

"I've learned it doesn't matter what community you're in", Dean told reporters when asked if he was surprised this happened in Thousand Oaks.

Investigators believe Long arrived Wednesday night at the bar in a vehicle, shot a security guard who was standing outside and then stepped inside.

Knapp said he has friends who haven't been accounted for.

The shooter's identity, as well as the identities and ages of the victims, has yet to be confirmed.

Witnesses said that people dropped to the floor and hid behind bar stools in stunned silence.

Friends are remembering sheriff's sergeant who was killed trying to stop a shooting rampage at a California bar as a "cop's cop" who didn't hesitate to run toward danger.
