Britain's Cross Counter grabs first Melbourne Cup for Godolphin

After Enable forced a rewrite of the record books at the Breeders' Cup on Saturday, another Newmarket-based horse made history at the 158th Melbourne Cup during the early hours of this morning. It was also 20 years after Faithful Son became the first runner for the Godolphin operation in Melbourne.

Earlier in the day the track had been downgraded from good to heavy as heavy rain made life extremely hard for the jockeys and horses in the lead-up races.

McEvoy's wife will also be happy with her husband - who steered Redzel to victory at the world's richest turf race, The Everest, in Sydney last month - after he promised that if he won, he'd buy her a new house.

Raced by Lloyd Williams and trained by Irish champion Aidan O'Brien, The Cliffsofmoher had to be put down, the fourth time in the past six years that the Cup has been shrouded by the death of horses.

One of sport's greatest hoodoos is no more and the billion-dollar Sheikh, whose earliest memory was galloping through the desert on a white stallion with his father, can finally say he is a Melbourne Cup victor.

"What a thrill, to do it for Sheikh Mohammed and Charlie Appleby".

Appleby's Melbourne Cup win came just days after he won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf on Friday with Line of Duty, surviving an inquiry/objection.

"For me, it is a very special to be here, but like I say, for a team it is just fantastic for everybody".

The Cliffsofmoher's mishap meant the James Cummings-trained Avilius was hampered.

A decision to target the Melbourne Cup fresh this year has nearly achieved the dream result for connections of English-trained stayer Marmelo at Flemington. "That's what it's all about, the learning curve". Obviously Godolphin has been a huge supporter of mine. For me, of course this is the biggest thing along with the Derby. "It's a dream. It has just been one of those awesome years".

Bin Suroor's Thunder Snow also won the $10 million Dubai World Cup in Meydan in March.

During the 2018 Flat season, Goldophin fielded 242 horses in Britain.

"RSPCA Australia has long voiced its concerns about the welfare of racehorses, including the use of inhumane devices such as whips and tongue ties, as well as the risk to injury and death during races", the RSPCA said in a statement.

The stewards' report listed Marmelo, as well as Aidan O'Brien's Yucatan (11th), as mildly lame after the race, while fellow Werribee resident Magic Circle (16th) displayed signs of an exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage post-race. "I hope he's watching. And many, many congratulations".
