UN ambassador Nikki Haley resigns, says she will not run in 2020

Nikki Haley and others in the U.S. delegation listen as President Donald Trump speaks at United Nations headquarters in Manhattan on Sept. 25 2018. Haley resigned her post as ambassador on Oct. 9

A former governor of SC who is the daughter of Indian immigrants, Haley is seen as a rising star in the Republican Party and a possible candidate in the 2020 presidential election.

Nikki Haley, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, is leaving her post at the end of the year, President Trump announced in the Oval Office Tuesday morning.

Nikki Haley on Tuesday abruptly resigned as USA ambassador to the United Nations, a move she said she had talked about with President Donald Trump for months.

The flights took the Haleys from her residence as ambassador in NY to Greenville and Charleston, from SC to Washington, and from Washington back to NY.

There was no immediate reaction from Haley or indication that the study was connected to her resignation. "And I do think it's good to rotate in other people who can put that same energy and power into it".

With one child in college and another heading there soon, Haley felt like she needs to make some money, the source said. So I look forward to supporting the president in the next election'. He added that she will stay on through the end of the year.

The meeting will be covered by a White House pool reporter.

One official says there was little coordination on the announcement and sources tell CNN that nearly all senior administration officials found themselves caught off guard by the announcement.

Haley's fast rise from a Southern state's legislature to the world stage suggests the 46-year-old may have greater political ambition.

"She's done a fantastic job, and we've done a fantastic job together", Trump said, adding that he'd be happy to have her back in another position.

"No, I'm not running in 2020", she said, vowing to campaign for Trump in 2020. But Haley constantly denied it, saying she hadn't given any thought to a presidential run.

"With all due respect, I don't get confused", Haley said. "Whatever Trump may have gotten wrong, his choice of Nikki Haley as ambassador to the United Nations was a masterstroke", the Boston Globe's Jeff Jacoby wrote recently. She cited US action on Syrian chemical weapons, trade deals, the arms embargo in South Sudan, U.N. sanctions against North Korea, pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal and moving the USA embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

A Washington, D.C., watchdog group wants a federal investigation into U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley's use of private planes owned by S.C. businessmen. Trump said he would name a successor within the next two or three weeks.

BBC New York correspondent Nick Bryant said Mrs Haley had formed a partnership with UN General Secretary Antonio Guterres to protect the UN against Mr Trump's anti-globalist agenda. "I don't agree with the president on everything".

The daughter of Indian immigrants, Haley alluded to Trump in denouncing "the siren call of the angriest voices" who disrespected America's immigrants.

Haley, seen in SC and Washington circles as sharp-elbowed and ambitious, had taken particular pride in keeping distance from the daily drama of the White House.

CREW reports that all three men donated to Haley's campaign when she was running for re-election to be governor of SC. As governor, she developed a national reputation as a racial conciliator who led the charge to bring down the Confederate flag at the Statehouse and helped guide the state through one of its darkest moments, the massacre at a black church.

In her brief White House press conference with President Trump, Haley said it was her "honor" to have defended America. Haley made sure to name-check Trump family members and White House aides Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, praising them for their work in the administration.
