Mister Rogers movie crew member dies after on-set fall

Tom Hanks

A representative for the Allegheny County Medical Examiner told The Blast that the 61-year-old Emswiller died from blunt force injuries to his head and torso after he fell from a two-story building.

He was taken to the hospital in serious condition, but after arriving his status worsened. Police said the man may have suffered a medical event before falling.

Down the street, a local dining spot called Hitchhikers Brewery is where a bunch of people were eating and they saw and heard the commotion.

Emmy-winning James Emswiller, who has worked on films such as The Avengers and The Fault In Our Stars, appeared to fall from a balcony in Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania, during a mid-shoot break, according to police.

"There were a bunch of fire trucks, like maybe two of three ambulances, it was a large commotion, everyone was staring", another witness, Sarah Pfabe, added.

Hanks, who plays Mr. Rogers in the movie about his life, was reportedly on set at the time of the accident.

Filming was halted on the night of Emswiller's death, but it's unclear when production will resume.

"This is a devastating tragedy and the studio is investigating the matter".

Tentatively titled You Are My Friend, the Hanks-led project will follow the real-life friendship between the legendary children's television host Fred Rogers and a cynical journalist named Tom Junod. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim's loved ones, friends, and colleagues", Sony Pictures/Tri-Star Pictures said in a statement. He picked up an Emmy for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Limited Series or Movie in 2015 for the HBO biopic "Bessie". The film was originally slated for release on October 18, 2019.
