McDonald's should pay its workers $15 an hour, Bernie Sanders says

At least four longtime workers, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity for fear they would be fired, said the $1 an hour raise would not make up for the lost benefits. "In fact, recruiters feel Amazon is the most attractive brand to attract talent, from the wages perspective".

Amazon India pays its workers 25% more than the minimum wage in Bengaluru, and about 60% higher than the minimum wages in cities such as Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad, according to data from staffing agencies Xpheno and TeamLease.

In June, Costco announced it was raising the minimum wage from $US13 to $US14.

Each state has its own minimum wage requirements, so it's hard to to decipher how much McDonald's hourly employees are paid.

"Our understanding is that the vast majority of Amazon workers are going to see wage increases, including some very significant increases as the minimum wage goes up to $15 an hour", Sanders said in a statement to FOX Business. Approximately 17,000 workers in the United Kingdom are also expected to receive salary increases.

Sanders' letter to CEO Steve Easterbrook follows news this week that Amazon will offer $15 an hour in November to more than 250,000 current employees, along with 100,000 more seasonal workers - drawing praise from the Democratic lawmaker himself.

Amazon India and Flipkart classify their delivery staff as semi-skilled, and some kinds of workers in their sorting centres as unskilled, industry members said. They have criticized the move as a publicity stunt by Jeff Bezos, the richest person alive worth an estimated US$165 billion. By those estimates, the EPI projects that the pending $15 minimum wage hike would cost California 400,000 private-sector jobs, with heavy losses in both the food service and retail sectors.

"It's a joke", Amazon warehouse employee Vicki Shannon Allen said to NBC News.

In the USA, the minimum wage at federal level is 7.25 dollars per hour, although local legislation in some states sets a higher level, for example in California where it is 10.50$ per hour, or in Florida 8.25$ per hour.

Experts have projected retail rivals, like Target and Walmart, which now pay minimum wage rates of $11, to increase wages faster than planned.

The wage increase garnered applause from Sanders who said, "I want to give credit where credit is due".

He added that McDonald's isn't a poor company. Townsend, 32, plans to demonstrate for higher pay on Thursday as part of the Fight for $15 movement. The competition for low-wage workers has become more fierce in recent years as the USA labor market has grown more competitive, sparking a "war for talent".
