Hillary Clinton to Donald Trump: 'You asked Russian Federation to hack me'

That's according to The New York Times, which reports Gates contacted Psy-Group, a company staffed by former Israeli intelligence agents, seeking ways to undermine Hillary Clinton's campaign.

One proposal outlined plans to target and manipulate 5,000 delegates to the Republican National Convention by attacking Texas senator Ted Cruz.

There is no evidence that the Trump campaign acted on the proposals, and Gates ultimately was uninterested in Psy-Group's work, a person with knowledge of the discussions said, in part because other campaign aides were developing a social media strategy. However, the owner of Psy-Group, Joel Zamel, did meet with Donald Trump Jr.in August 2016.

Several different proposals authored by the Israeli company, Psy-Group, have been discovered.

Throughout "Project Rome" the company would disguise its activities through the use of codenames: "The Lion" for Trump, "The Bear" for Cruz and "The Forest" for Hillary Clinton.

Psy-Group claimed that it would provide "all services in accordance with the laws and regulations of the country/ies in which they are conducted".

There was no evidence that the Trump campaign followed through on the proposals to use social media manipulation and intelligence gathering.

The report notes that the work sought from the Israeli company went beyond typical campaign efforts to use social media to influence voters.

This 1998 frame from video provided by C-SPAN shows George Nader, president and editor of Middle East Insight.

US Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating those Russian efforts, as well as possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Moscow.

In February, Gates pledged to cooperate with Mueller as he pleaded guilty to defrauding the U.S. by failing to report offshore banking accounts, as well as to one count of lying over his work as a foreign agent for Ukraine. What makes things even more suspicious is that Nader also met with Donald Trump Jr.in August 2016 at Trump Tower to offer his assistance to the campaign.

Zamel has been questioned by investigators for the special counsel, according to the reports, and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents have traveled to Israel to interview employees about the proposal and have asked Israeli police to seize computers from Psy-Group's Petah Tikva offices. "He was not interested and that was the end of it".
