Going the distance: Brees breaks National Football League mark for yards passing

Just hours after the New Orleans Saints handed the Washington Redskins a 43-19 loss, Skins cornerback Josh Norman and Saints wideout Michael Thomas were in the middle of an epic war of words. Brees, who already holds the single-season record for completion rate at 72 percent last season, finished the game a remarkable 26 of 29 for 363 yards, no interceptions and three touchdowns - two of them going to Smith, a third-round draft choice out of Central Florida has played just five National Football League games and is now immortalized because of his role in Brees' record-breaking pass. Washington is 5-21 on Mondays this century, with an average margin of defeat of 10.4 points.

We've seen a different Redskins team every week this season. For the season, he's rushed for 242 yards and three touchdowns on 60 carries. "And yet, when something like this happens, there are so many people who are responsible for that, that are a part of that, that makes me happy".

The visiting Redskins (2-1) are coming off a bye week and have just watched their NFC East rivals - the Giants, Eagles, and Cowboys - all lose, giving them an opportunity to take hold of the division.

Smith finished with three catches for 111 yards. Norman appeared to blow his assignment on Brees's record-setting touchdown pass and found himself on the bench for the Saints' first possession after halftime.

They've only played three games, but Washington's defense now ranks first in yards allowed per game (278.0), passing yards allowed per game (187.3) and points allowed per game (14.7).

"Overall, our whole team played poorly and that's a reflection of myself", coach Jay Gruden said.

Brees entered the game needing 201 yards for the record. In it, Norman struggles - like, really struggles - with the seemingly simple task of removing his jersey for the traditional swap with a Saints player.

Adrian Peterson suffered a shoulder strain and will have an MRI. "He's in charge. I respect the head man in charge".

Nicholson owes his teammates all of the beignets after his lapse in judgment led to the Saints' second touchdown.

Washington gets a big break in the return of left tackle Trent Williams, who has played like one of the best players at his position leaguewide when healthy.

"Thanks to you, that's over now", Manning continued as the laughter erupted in the stands.
