Boston's Brock Holt rides into history on game's first postseason cycle

The Red Sox routed the Yankees 16-1 in Game 3 of the ALDS to take a 2-1 series lead on Monday.

Boston battered an ineffective Luis Severino and silenced a charged-up Yankee Stadium crowd that emptied out fast on a night when Red Sox rookie manager Alex Cora made all the right moves. Nate Eovaldi, a former Yankees pitcher, had already thrown one of the best games of his career and shut down the greatest home run hitting team of all-time.

The Yankees came away from Boston with a split and are now favorites to win the series against the Red Sox. "He was able to sit down for three or four minutes and go out".

With Porcello pitching two-thirds of an inning, the Red Sox were forced to make a decision. Severino was sent back out for the fourth and left a mess for Lynn, as Holt and Vazquez knocked back-to-back singles to right and Jackie Bradley Jr. walked.

One afternoon this week, some of his Red Sox teammates and coaches were making light of Mookie Betts, their likely MVP and most unassuming friend.

The situation gained some traction on social media.

"He got his normal pitches routine", Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.

This outing continued that troubling trend for Severino.

Regardless of the numbers, though, it's up to Eovaldi to execute - and going back to the thought of series placement, this is his first postseason start, so it's important to avoid a situation like Severino found himself in during last year's AL Wild Card Game, which was his first postseason start.

He also created his own unfortunate spot in Yankees postseason history. It was Friday night, moments before the opening game of the American League Division Series and a couple of hours before Porcello-to his surprise and most everyone else's-would be summoned to pitch.

Yankees right-hander Luis Severino looks on against the Oakland Athletics during the first inning of the AL wild-card game at Yankee Stadium on October 3, 2018. Yankees relievers added gasoline to the fire, with all five who entered allowing at least one run. But the Yankees scored five runs (on eight hits) off Porcello in 5 1/3 innings May 9 in NY. In the four games, Hernandez has been Sabathia's home plate umpire, the lefty has allowed just five runs over 31 innings.

Sure enough, catcher Austin Romine came in to pitch the ninth inning. Brock Holt recorded the first cycle in Major League Baseball postseason history.

There's no other way to put it.

"For a game like this, you have to remember what time it is", Severino said.

The over is 8-1 in the last nine Yankees games overall.

Porcello's August start was not an outlier for him against NY.
