A 'Swift' Impact: Tenn. voter registration skyrockets after Swift's Instagram endorsement

Taylor Swift's political statement prompts enormous uptick in voter registrations

Taylor Swift's decision to break her longstanding silence on politics and urge people to back Democrats in the upcoming USA mid-term elections has led to a massive spike in registrations, according to a voter advocacy group. Of the 5,183 new registrations in Tennessee so far this month, at least 2,144 came in the last 36 hours, an increase from the 2,811 voters who registered in September and 951 in August. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives.

Kamari Guthrie, director of communications for vote.org shared, "We are up to 65,000 registrations in a single 24-hour period since T. Swift's post".

The number of new voters in Tennessee also spiked, she said, with 2,144 signing up in the more than a day since Swift's encouragement.

Young voters in Tennessee can stand with Swift, for example, when she supports candidates who will fight for "ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love", as she wrote in her post. Writing that she's "been reluctant to publicly voice" her political opinions in the past, "several events" in her life and the world have made her feel differently.

Diane Pecknold, professor of women's and gender studies at the University of Louisville, said Swift's transition from country to pop has broadened her fan base.

She added: "I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of colour is terrifying, sickening and prevalent". I can not vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love.

"Marsha Blackburn is doing a very good job now in Tennessee". I can not vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Marsha Blackburn, saying Blackburn's record of voting against LGBTQ and women's rights "appalls and terrifies me". She voted against equal pay for women. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples.

Swift included the URL to vote.org, which reported almost 65,000 people nationwide between the ages of 18 and 29 had registered since Sunday night when the post went live.

Two years ago, Democrats turned million-dollar performances by pop icons such as Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Pharrell, Jennifer Lopez, Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, Bon Jovi and Katy Perry into zero electoral votes.

"I'm sure Taylor Swift doesn't know anything about (Blackburn)", Trump said. "Let's say that I like Taylor's music about 25 percent less now, OK?"

She also acknowledged her past reluctance to address political issues but said that had changed in the past two years.

The October surprise of 2018 might well be a perfectly timed Instagram post from Taylor Swift. The site typically has 14,078 average daily visitors, Guthrie said.

The singer's intervention was not well received by the country's top Republican, U.S. President Donald Trump.

The singer, who has long avoided wading into politics, broke that trend in a Sunday Instagram post.

MEANWHILE, MAGA supporter Kanye West is scheduled to meet Trump this week at the White House.

She's not the first artist to endorse Bredesen, a former Tennessee governor who has been helped in his current campaign by four-time Grammy-winner Jason Isbell and rocker Ben Folds.
