US Open results: Serena Williams advances, Sloane Stephens upset by Anastasija Sevastova

Karolina Pliskova

"I could have [lost] in the first round, and that would have been really bad", she said, invoking some colorful imagery in the process.

It felt like 1,000 degrees on Arthur Ashe midday Tuesday, but it didn't seem to bother Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova too much as she steamrolled her way into her first grand slam semifinals, beating Stephens 6-2, 6-3.

Williams, seeded 17th, meets the last player to beat her at the U.S. Open. "I didn't convert. I didn't play the big points well, and you don't win matches when you don't take your opportunities".

Sevastova, playing her third consecutive quarter-final match here, reached her best result at Grand Slam level extending to 15-5 her career record in NY, her best record among the four majors.

Defending champion Sloane Stephens has been knocked out of the US Open in the quarter-finals after defeat by 19th seed Anastasija Sevastova.

If Nadal wins that, he and del Potro would have a third consecutive Grand Slam meeting: del Potro lost to the 17-time major champ in the French Open semifinals and the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

In her last two matches, Sevastova has defeated Stephens and No. 7 Elina Svitolina. This is her first US Open semifinal appearance after making it to quarters the past two years.

"You think, 'Oh, but in the end it's wonderful, yeah?' You can't believe, yeah". And when you're, like, winning a tournament, you think that's normal. "So after I stop at some point I will look at it and I will be proud of myself, for sure". Sevastova actually retired from tennis for the 2013 and 2014 seasons, so she's coming back in a big way. Now ranked No.18, ranked inside the Top 20 every week but four since her debut on May 15, 2017, she claimed her fifth hard court semifinal of her career, having advanced to that stage - but never further - at 2010 Monterrey, 2017 Dubai, 2017 Zhuhai and 2018 Brisbane. That was the first set dropped by del Potro in the tournament. Sevastova has had some experience playing Pliskova - Sevastova leads their head-to-head 2-1, and the last time they met, in 2017, Sevastova won the match no contest.

"It was an incredible journey this three, four years", Sevastova told reporters after the match, a repeat of last month's Rogers Cup semi which Stephens won in straight sets.

Sevastova will face the victor of Tuesday's Serena Williams vs.
