'Mrs. Maisel,' 'Game of Thrones' win top Emmy honors

Emmy Awards celebrate best of television with Game of Thrones, Westworld leading nominations

Join us as we follow the action. The show was first nominated in 1976, the same year that it took home its first award in the category.

Thandie Newton won outstanding supporting actress in a drama series for Westworld. "They said, 'No, no, we'll shoot around you".

After a conventional series of thank you's in her acceptance speech, she noted that she's playing a woman who "finds her voice anew" and urged viewers to use their own voices in the voting booth - and to bring a friend.

To this day, Peter Dinklage is the only actor on Game of Thrones to win an Emmy Award for his work on the show. "It was definitely hard to say goodbye to because it wasn't just saying goodbye to the show, I was saying goodbye to a life over there".

HBO dark comedy Barry notched two acting wins - for Winkler and series star Bill Hader.

"Saturday Night Live" cast members Kate McKinnon and Kenan Thompson did a jokey song and dance number titled "We Solved It". "Because I want to call you my wife", he added to cheers, applause and a few teary-eyed actors in the audience.

Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, producing his second Emmy telecast in 30 years, was tasked with turning viewership around after the 2017 show's audience of 11.4 million narrowly avoided the embarrassment of setting a new low.

Other big winners included FX's The Assassination of Gianni Versace, which won Emmys for best limited series and best lead actor in a limited series for Darren Criss, who took a dark turn as the designer's killer Andrew Cunanan.

"I don't even believe in God, but I am going to thank her tonight", Newton said.

Below are the winners from the night, so check and see if your favorite show won an Emmy!
