James Bond 25: Cary Fukunaga named as new director

James Bond through the years

He will direct Bond star Daniel Craig, who plays Bond for a fifth time, in what is expected to be his last stint as the secret agent created by author Ian Fleming in 1953.

'We are delighted to be working with Cary. "His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure", producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in a statement.

Cary Joji Fukunaga has been given a license to thrill. This shifts Bond back four months from its previous launch date of October 25, and takes the 007 installment out of its traditional winter slot. In 2015, his Beasts of No Nation earned raves and awards love.

Fukunaga's appointment appears to have been a well-kept secret, with rumours surrounding directors Yann Demange and S.J. Clarkson as possible replacements for Boyle.

Rumours were rife about Craig and Boyle clashing over other casting issues - with the actor being said to have signed off on all major new signings since he began his tenure.

His latest project, Maniac, is a Netflix series starring Jonah Hill and Emma Stone as participants in a mysterious pharmaceutical trial.

He also wrote and directed the 2009 film Sin Nombre and the 2011 film Jane Eyre.

Cary rose to fame in 2014 after directing and producing the first series of True Detective with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

The film will serve as Craig's final outing as the iconic British spy, following massive critical and commercial success with Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall and Spectre.
