How Man United survived Watford onslaught, made Mourinho smile

Phil Thompson thinks Marcus Rashford's lack of game time at Man Utd is because of Jose Mourinho's lac

Although the hosts initially looked bright, United finished the first half utterly dominant and 2-0 up thanks to Romelu Lukaku and Chris Smalling, whose goals were three minutes and 11 seconds apart.

"He was good, the only thing I don't like from Chris at this moment is his haircut, but I am nobody to tell him that", Mourinho joked in his post-match news conference.

But two goals in three first-half minutes from in-form Romelu Lukaku and Chris Smalling gave them valuable breathing space at half-time and ultimately paved the way to a victory that ended Watford's ideal record.

The speculation about Pogba's future has continued in recent weeks but Mourinho has now insisted that he knows nothing about the midfielder's apparent desire to quit Old Trafford. He then read off a prepared list of stats accentuating Rashford's minutes played.

The visitors registered only one shot on goal in the second period and were content to sit back and try to hit Watford on the counter, but Javi Gracia did not have the options on the bench to break down Jose Mourinho's side.

Fellaini made his second start of the season on Saturday after impressing against Burnley last time out, and Mourinho is delighted with the Belgian's form, while also crediting his "simple" style of play.

Under Mourinho, however, Rashford's playing time has come into question with some believing the Portuguese is failing in developing the youngster which gained more traction as he scored twice in two games for England over the worldwide break. The manager has been forced into a change, with Luke Shaw suffering a concussion while on global duty.

Ashley Young came in against his former club but Mourinho confirmed Shaw will start in the Champions League against Young Boys on Wednesday.

"I am very happy with the spirit", United manager Jose Mourinho said.

"He'll be a happy man tonight because of that, because of the other side of the game which you have to show and they showed it very well". But I also feel a little frustrated because we had everything in the first half.

"Luke's evolution made us believe he goes in the right direction and of course I want to keep him. We gave them the chance to be reborn, score a goal and give us a hard match".

"Our fans have to be proud of us, we have to make an effort and I think the players have done that".

Even Mourinho said, after the match, that he expects United to play like they did in the first half.

"If you don't mind losing a couple of minutes, I'm going to do something not for you [the media] but the United fans and I think I hold myself to the United fans and for them I am going to spend two minutes with you", Mourinho began.
