Child bitten in second Whitsundays shark attack in 24 hours

Crewman Ben McCauley said an emergency doctor who was sailing nearby and others who gave first aid to Barwick had likely saved her life.

There hasn't been a fatal shark attack in Queensland since 2014 when 18-year-old Daniel Smith was attacked by a tiger shark near Rudder Reef near Port Douglas.

Less than 24 hours later, a 12-year-old girl was attacked in a similar area.

A RACQ Rescue Helicopter spokeswoman said that if it wasn't for the people who found her and packed her wounds, the woman would be dead.

It is the second serious shark attack in Queensland's Whitsunday Islands within 24 hours.

The attack comes are a woman was attacked while snorkelling early last night.

A CHILD has been airlifted to hospital after being bitten by a shark at Cid Harbour in the Whitsundays.

"The patient's injuries today are again a shark attack bite to the patient's thigh area, with significant blood loss", Eastwick told reporters in Mackay, where the girl is in a serious condition in hospital.

A Tasmanian tourist remains in a critical condition after being bitten by a shark near a yacht moored in the Whitsunday Islands in north Queensland.

On Thursday at 1.45pm, Queensland Ambulance confirmed paramedics were on their way to the Cid Harbour to reports the female victim has been bitten on the leg.

She was taken to the Mackay Base Hospital, where she is now being treated.

Ms Barwick works for non-profit Family Based Care in Burnie and had travelled to the Whitsundays on a holiday with her husband Craig and friends.
