The German brand says its new electric SUV is powered by two electric motors that are "locally CO2-neutral and virtually silent".

Audi did not give us net USA horsepower or torque for the two electric motors, which it said would be announced closer to launch.

Last year, Tesla sold 94 percent of the luxury electric vehicles in the US, according to LMC Automotive. Audi has teamed up with Amazon Home Services to sell home chargers for $1,000 to customers in addition to scheduling an electrician to install the charger.

Tesla CEO Musk has long said he welcomes the arrival of more electric vehicles because it will grow the EV market and ultimately spur more people to stop driving gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicles.

The new Audi e-tron needs 5.5 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour (96 km/h) from a standstill and can continue the sprint towards 124 miles per hour (200 km/h). The auto, which is now being christened as "Audi e-tron", is a midsize SUV and will be offered in the United States next year at a starting price of $75,795 before a $7,500 tax credit.

The e-tron is the latest in a string of dedicated EVs from European automakers that are taking aim at Tesla and other startups with Tesla-like ambitions. The technology in this automobile was developed in collaboration with Porsche; the design and character of the e-tron GT concept are packed full of unmistakable Audi DNA.

The automaker says numbers for the United States market are pending, but anecdotal data, acquired from a handful of U.S. road trips in a prototype e-tron, produced ranges as high roughly 270 miles on a full charge, according to Audi president, Scott Keogh. It recaptures energy to charge the battery as it is coasting as well as during braking, with the driver able to select the amount of energy recovery via paddles on the steering wheel.

All e-tron models will come standard with adaptive dampers and an air suspension capable of adjusting the vehicle's ride height by up to 3 inches.

As you would expect from a modern, futuristic electric vehicle, the gadgetry on the inside of e-tron is incredible as well.

Prices for the e-tron will start from $74,800 for a Premium Plus model, which includes niceties like a premium audio system, heated and cooled front seats, and a panoramic sunroof as standard. Next one in the range is Prestige that comes with additional features like head-up display, Driver Assistance package, rear window sunshades, Valcona Leather, and memory settings for the front passenger seat. The Mercedes-Benz EQ C, the first nameplate in the automaker's all-electric sub-brand, is a 200-mile range crossover that delivers 402 horsepower using an 80-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The e-tron is built at Audi's plant in Brussels.
