Amazon launches section dedicated to small business

Amazon launches Storefronts catering to small businesses

Amazon has established a separate section where it will highlight small businesses, feature curated collections of unique products and provide a platform for an online small business experience.

Amazon has given customers who are anxious about the e-commerce behemoth killing small businesses a way to shop on the site while feeling less guilty.

A variety of product categories will be featured including Back to School, Halloween, Home, Kitchen, Pet Supplies, Kitchen and Books.

The company has launched a new section of its website called Amazon Storefronts, a store that looks a lot like Etsy and offers customers access to "over 1 million products" from 20,000 "small and medium-sized" USA businesses.

"Amazon first invited businesses to sell on Amazon almost two decades ago, and today, small and medium-sized businesses are a vital part of Amazon's large selection and commitment to customers", said Nicholas Denissen, vice president for Amazon, in Monday's announcement.

Amazon has launched a page to showcase small-and-medium-sized United States businesses that sell on Amazon, called Storefronts.

The existing Amazon marketplace is already a powerful sales driver for SMBs, which account for half the items sold on the e-Commerce giant worldwide, according to the Amazon Small Business Impact Report. "We're championing their success with this new store". Instead of navigating thousands of online sellers, Amazon wants customers to interact with small businesses and have an intimate, mom-and-pop-shop experience through the online platform. Minnery said he started selling his toys on Amazon Handmade about two years ago and was asked by Amazon to join Storefronts.

As if that wasn't enough, now Amazon is replacing physical businesses in cities with its very own brick-and-mortar stores. In 2017, more than 300,000 USA -based small and medium-sized businesses started selling on Amazon.

The nonprofit Institute for Local Self-Reliance found that most small businesses blame Amazon for fewer sales.

The American-centric collection of over 1 million products could also help mitigate persistent - and widely refuted - criticisms from President Donald Trump that Amazon wasn't paying enough in taxes and underpaying the US Postal Service.
