Sevilla have threatened legal action ahead of Sunday's Spanish Super Cup after a late change of rules cleared Barcelona to use more non-European Union players.

Lionel Messi was named Man of the Match and lifted his first trophy as FC Barcelona captain after his side beat Sevilla in the Supercopa de Espana courtesy of a rocket strike by Ousmane Dembele.

A Sevilla club statement read: "Sevilla FC is surprised by the RFEF's statement 24 hours before the Super Cup".

Dembele scored the victor in the 78th minute after Gerard Pique had cancelled out Pablo Sarabia's opener as Barca beat Sevilla 2-1 in Tangier, Morocco.

Pablo Sarabia opened for Sevilla in the ninth, when the video assistant referee overruled an offside call in the first use of VAR in Spanish competition.

"It was a good match, in which they also had chances".

The Barcelona equaliser did arrive before the break, however, with Pique converting from close range after Messi's free kick had come back off the post and hit Vaclik before dropping into a unsafe position. While he didn't score, MESSI did play a great through ball to Luis SUAREZ which was ultimately wasted and his free kick which hit the post fell to Gerard PIQUE who scored off the rebound.

But Ben Yedder hit a weak penalty in the Sevilla vs Barcelona gamenwhich was easily saved by Ter Stegen.

But Barcelona have yet to officially clarify Philippe Coutinho's new status.

Sevilla responded by introducing Portugal global Andre Silva, with the striker making his debut following a move from AC Milan.

Franco Vazquez then headed an Ever Banega corner onto the crossbar moments later as Sevilla came within inches of taking the lead in Morocco once again.

Former Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal debuted for Barcelona as a late substitute.

Dembele's victor gave Barca the ideal start to the new campaign, unlike a year ago when they lost to Real Madrid in the Super Cup.
