Trump Administration Wants Space Force Created By 2020

Pence Will Reveal Trump's'Space Force Plan Today Watch It Live

"As President Trump has said, in his words, it is not enough to merely have an American presence in space".

David Cicilline, who sits in the House of Representatives, asked if "no Republican" would tell the president "what a dumb idea Space Force is".

The first US rockets were launched by the USA military, and NASA's first astronauts were military officers, Pence said. It will literally be called Space Force.

But what is Space Force, and is it really more than a Donald Trump campaign crowd-pleaser?

The Department of Defense is expected to release a report later today "outlining the first stages of our administration's plan to implement the president's guidance and turn his vision into a reality", Pence said.

Would a Space Force fighter have to battle ALF? The Air Force became the fifth branch of the US armed forces in 1947.

Space warfare capabilities are now overseen by the US Air Force.

It would become the U.S. military's sixth branch, following the Army, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps.

"That may drive a militarization of space", she said. A unified combatant command known as the U.S. Space Command would be formed by the end of 2018, according to a copy reviewed by Reuters.

The White House says that the Space Force will be created by 2020. Both countries have tested anti-satellite technology in the past and are actively pursuing hypersonic weapons that surpass current missile-defense capabilities, Pence said.

It's unclear whether the crowd favorite among these options could be used in an official capacity within Space Force or just on merchandise.

"The space force is the next and natural evolution of American military strength", the Veep said.

"Our adversaries have transformed space into a warfighting domain already and the United States will not shrink from this challenge", Pence added. In a speech at the Pentagon, Pence said the proposed organization would be the sixth branch of the armed forces, sitting alongside the Army, Navy, Air Force, and so on.

A Space Development Agency will be charged with developing and fielding new capabilities, and a single civilian authority - the assistant secretary of defense for space - who will oversee the branch and report on the force's growth and expansion to the Defense secretary.

This fourth addition could be what most differentiates the Space Force from the AFSPC.

Speaking Thursday morning at the Pentagon, Mr. Pence said the Trump administration sees space as the next frontier in war and is ready to take dramatic action to prepare for conflicts.
