Ruby Rose will play a queer Batwoman on the CW

Ruby Rose Cast As Batwoman In the CW’s DC Crossover & Potential Series

Next up for The CW is expanding the Arrowverse to include Batwoman, who will be played by former Orange is the New Black star, Ruby Rose. Batwoman is set to make her debut during the annual Arrowverse crossover in the fall among Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, and Supergirl.

CW has confirmed its version of the character will be an out lesbian with "a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind".

'But don't call her a hero yet. "After a long hiatus, she was reintroduced to the DC comic universe in 2006 when she was established as a Jewish lesbian, becoming the first-ever lesbian superhero title DC character". Ruby Rose will take up the cape and cowl this winter in The CW's major Arrowverse crossover event, and possibly in the starring role of a Batwoman series that's now in development for the network.

Rose is set to first don Kate Kane's mask and fiery red wig in this fall's Arrowverse crossover event before headlining her own solo series now in development at the network.

The CW has found its Batwoman and the casting couldn't be more flawless.

Tweeted one person: "No tea no shade, but is Ruby Rose the only lesbian actress Hollywood knows, or do they just don't want to take any chances by hiring an unknown lesbian actress and giving her a chance to rise in her career?"

'The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored, ' the Australian starlet wrote on Instagram. The solo series, by writer Greg Rucka and artist J. H. Williams III received much critical acclaim, and was one of the most high-profile LGBTQ characters in comics. According to the casting description for the role, "Young Ms Kane is physically and intellectually confident while being a woman who is proud to be openly gay".

Plans are also afoot to give Kane/Batwoman a series of her own.

Outside of Orange is the New Black, Rose has starred in xXx: Return of Xander Cage, John Wick Chapter 2 and can be seen in the upcoming movie, The Meg.
