Priyanka Chopra grieves the death of Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Former PM Vajpayee put on life support as health worsens

His condition had deteriorated over the past couple of days, after which he continued to be on life-support system.

Following the collapse of the Janata Party government led by Morarji Desai, it was Vajpayee who revamped the Jan Sangh as the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980. Kidney tract infection, chest congestion and urine output being on the lower side are the medical complaints. "An iconic leader on the world stage, Vajpayee led India with great wisdom, foresight and love for the country", said N Chandrasekaran, Chairman Tata Sons.

As prime minister, Mr Vajpayee was not afraid to take risks.

"All of us who knew Vajpayee are saddened to hear of his passing away".

But the next year, when Islamabad sent fighters across the ceasefire line that divides the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir between the nations, Vajpayee resisted military pressure to launch a broad counter-attack of Indian forces.

Sharif had believed relations with India were improving. The tests confirmed India as a nuclear power.

A talented orator, one of Vajpayee's most remembered speeches was a hugely critical one, bemoaning India's lack of progress after five decades of independence.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also condoled the death of Vajpayee and said his passing away is a big loss to the country. "We can't make primary education a necessity. The birth of a girl in this country is still a curse".

Odisha government has declared government holiday tomorrow in the state.

Besides, BJP President Amit Shah, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani, and a host of other union cabinet ministers, also visited the hospital since Thursday morning to know about his latest health condition.

This apart, the national flag will be flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning for Vajpayee who is considered as a great visionary and "Bhishma Pitamah of Indian Politics".

"At a time when an external stimulus has motivated us to unite against terrorism and for security, let us summon an equally strong inner resolve for development and poverty alleviation", Vajpayee said in his speech to the UN.

Just a year later, though, he told a mostly Hindu audience, "Wherever there are Muslims in large numbers, they do not want to live in peace".
