PGA Championship resumes with second round at wet Bellerive

Tiger Woods walks off to change his shirt at the 12th hole at a hot and humid Bellerive Country Club in St Louis

Schwartzel wound up with a two-putt par.

Koepka was at 8-under 132, two shots behind. That left him with a 64 and dropped him into second place, one shot back.

Or will Koepka nab his second major title of the year and third of his career?

Pulling a five-iron from his bag, Wallace watched as his shot hit the green, took two hops and rolled straight into the cup triggering a massive roar that washed over Bellerive Country Club.

Having been part of Friday's afternoon wave forced to return on Saturday morning, his chances of extending his stay were ended by a double bogey at the par three 16th.

Woods, a 14-time major victor in the eighth month of his comeback from spinal fusion surgery, opened Saturday with a birdie at the par-5 eighth.

Johnson also missed a 10-footer for birdie at the sixth.

The four-time US PGA champion is 10 under on the front nine for the tournament, but two over on the back nine this week. It keeps trending toward the red numbers, meaning it could take being under par just to play the weekend.

That's what impressed Furyk the most - not so much the five birdies, but Finau's response to the triple bogey.

Tiger Woods, reviver of wandering events.

An encouraging second round one-under 69 did provide a reminder of what the 2016 Open champion is capable of and an elbow injury has provided a hindrance in recent weeks. "And 18 is playing pretty short as well". Throw in greens that players have figured out and still conditions and it's no surprise that guys are going low.

Woods completed 36 holes at 4-under 136 and is six strokes behind leader Gary Woodland, who set the PGA Championship 36-hole scoring record of 130.

Now, the record-watching begins.

ST. LOUIS - For the second consecutive major championship, Tiger Woods finds himself in contention heading to the final round. Hiroshi Iwata also had a 9-under round at the 2015 PGA at Whistling Straits. After an errant tee shot, Spieth found his ball in the hazard.

Jim Furyk will get four captain's picks on September 4, and Mickelson stands a good chance of being one of them. Woods struggled early in his first round with a couple bogies. A heavy rainstorm on Friday night will produce even lower scores than Bellerive saw on Friday. Of course, we've all been there, save the part about playing in a major and actually being good enough to warrant being ticked off at missing a fairway.

"I thought I played really clean cards, really clean rounds", said Woods, who made eight birdies and three bogeys over the course of the two rounds.

The PGA Championship will be held next year at Bethpage Black in May.

Only the U.S. Open at $12 million had more on the line.

Schwartzel's only top-five finish since his Masters triumph came a year ago when he finished third at Augusta National behind the head-to-head duel of victor Sergio Garcia and Britain's Justin Rose. But what he did to make the 36-hole cut will be remembered - and probably improved his chances of being picked for the US team in the Ryder Cup. Seemed like everybody was between 2- and 4- or 5-under par.

Another poor tee shot the following hole had him in more trouble.

But after pitching to 10 feet he holed the putt for par, celebrating with a fist pump before the ball had actually dropped into the cup.

"With eight holes left there were a few tricky holes in there".
