Health Department confirms first case of West Nile Virus in Shelby County

Birds are the natural hosts of West Nile virus.

Kozhikode: One case of West Nile fever has been confirmed in Kozhikode.

West Nile virus is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Anyone who thinks they may be infected should see a doctor immediately, officials said. A very small proportion of human infections have occurred through organ transplant, blood transfusions and breast milk.

Symptoms of the viral disease vary from person to person, the CDC noted.

In Maryland, there were five reported cases of West Nile previous year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

People over 50-years-old, those with chronic diseases, and those who require medical treatment that weakens their immune system are most at risk. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, body aches, skin rashes and swollen lymph nodes.

Between 2013 and 2015, there were no reported human cases with only single cases reported in 2016 and 2017.

The best way to prevent infection from any mosquito-borne illness, including West Nile Virus, is to use mosquito repellent that contains DEET and by covering up during outdoor activities - wearing shoes, socks, long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt. "You should wear insect repellant if you go outside during dusk or dawn and should remove standing water around your home".

Officials also recommend dumping out standing water that can collect in old tires, planters, buckets, toys, flowerpots, trash cans and birdbaths.

Be sure to check screens for holes and run the air conditioner when you can.
