The Red Devils have turned their attention back to the Leicester City star after seeing an attempt to sign Jerome Boateng from Bayern Munich on loan rejected.

Kovac's first starting XI was as expected with James Rodriguez, Corentin Tolisso and Jerome Boateng all resting or injured and Bayern grabbed the lead in the 22nd minute. French sports daily "L'Equipe" reports about PSG's growing interest, though concedes that the club has to consider Financial Fair Play rules.

Manchester United is not an option for Jerome Boateng despite eyeing a move away from Bayern Munich.

Jose Mourinho has warned Manchester United face a "difficult season" if they do not strengthen their squad before the Premier League transfer window shuts on Thursday, AFP reports.

Jose Mourinho's side reportedly lodged a £22.5m bid for the World Cup victor on Tuesday after moves for other targets hit the buffers, but were promptly told that it would take twice that to tempt Bayern to cash in.

"But it will take more than a quality defender to galvanise them".

"We've had success with him a lot in the past and I know him very well. He is one of the world's best, and we need his physical presence on the pitch". The current relationship between Rummenigge and Boateng isn't a healthy one and with Bayern Munich looking to defend their Bundesliga campaign for a seventh consecutive time, perhaps it would be wise to move Boateng on.

During his three-month injury break in 2016, Boateng was accused by Bayern officials of neglecting his recovery and participating in too many celebrity events. The player said the accusations were a great disappointment but he admitted to intensifying his rehabilitation. "We will announce any news whenever there is some to announce, but for now there is nothing new", Salihamidzic stressed.
