Jose Mourinho 'not confident' of deadline day signings

Manchester United's Paul Pogba in action against Liverpool during the FA Premier League match at Anfield

Manchester United could do with two deadline day additions, says Wayne Rooney, with Jose Mourinho a couple of players away from competing for the Premier League title.

That felt like a reference to Liverpool but, more importantly for United, it was also an admission that it will need a dramatic improvement this season for his own team to bridge the gap.

The Reds will start the new Premier League campaign with a clash against West Ham United at Anfield on Sunday.

"I am not confident, and the market closes today, so it's time, at least for me, to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed".

The striker turned broadcast pundit believes Liverpool's mental edge over City following three victories against them last season - twice in the Champions League and once in the league - could be the difference if City do not runaway with the title in the manner they did last season.

'Its hard for me to believe we finished second.

"I am not confident", Mourinho said of United's chance of new signings ahead of Friday's Premier League opener against Leicester.

With so much business being done since the end of last season, it has been tough to keep track of who has gone where.

"But I hope someone can catch them - it would be nice, so hopefully Manchester United can". "In Championship Manager you can just press a button".

The Gunners kicked off last season with an exciting win over Leicester, and this year we're thinking something similar will happen against Guardiola's side.

"Of course it's hard to understand for people in football that Tottenham didn't sign or sell players, but sometimes in football you need to behave differently", he said in his press conference earlier today, as per The Mirror.

'I said during pre-season - it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, something insane - but I repeat: pre-season is hard when you don't have your players to work, it's as simple as that'.

'My view is that first of all it's hard for me to believe we finished second, ' said Mourinho of last season.
