Fuqua said the move "will happen eventually" and Elba is reportedly the first choice to take on the role.

Who will be the next James Bond?

Fuqua probably isn't in any position for Broccoli to reveal any concrete information to him (especially if he blabs it all over the internet...), and it's likely that the conversation is still just a rumor, but it's also true that Elba probably would make a brilliant Bond. Idris Elba was a massive early favourite back in 2015, but his own denials and so much time passing had bumped him down the list.

Elba's name has always been tossed around as an ideal candidate. Sure, he's a high-ranking fixture of Hollywood - he's the director behind Olympus Has Fallen, The Equalizer, The Equalizer 2, Southpaw, The Magnificent Seven, the Academy Award-winning Training Day, and many others - but he hasn't been involved with a Bond film in any capacity thus far.

For his part, Elba has repeatedly dismissed rumours that have persisted for years that he was next in line to play the dashing spy.

The Luther actor said that people only suggest his name for the role because he's black, not because he's right for the role. "It could be a woman - could be a black woman, could be a white woman - but I think, that character, everybody would like to see it have...do something different with it, why not?"
