Health Experts: Number of West Nile cases in Virginia about average

Chris Cookman, owner of Mosquito Joe in Bolingbroke, wasn't surprised when he heard reports of the West Nile Virus in Middle Georgia.

With Milner Stadium in the middle alert zone, high school football games this week mean there will be a lot more people in the area than just residents.

"It's important for everyone to continue taking precautions like using insect repellent, wearing long sleeve shirts and trousers, and staying indoors between dusk and dawn".

One person has died in Georgia due to West Nile Virus, leading state health officials to warn residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites.

According to the DPH, the best ways to avoid infection are to stay inside during dusk and dawn hours, wear long trousers, shirts, and socks if you are exposed to mosquitoes, and wear the proper insect repellant to dissuade any thirsty bugs.

· Use insect repellants containing DEET, Picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

"While most people who are infected recover without any long-term problems, some develop a more severe infection that can lead to complications and even death - especially those over 50 years of age", Byers said.

Cover up: Wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers. Always follow label directions.

Remove standing water around your home and yard to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.

- Use screens on your windows and doors. Birds and horses can also contract the virus.

Michael Hokanson, with the North Central Health District, confirms there have been under 5 cases reported in the district. EEE is rare illness in humans, and only a few cases are reported in the United States each year, according to this DPH press release. Four in five of those who become infected with the virus will not show any symptoms, according to the Department of Public Health. Of that number, two were Montgomery County residents.

The CDC has reported less than 20 cases every year dating back to 2013.
